Resources

Here’s where I’ll post my spreadsheets and other tools I’ve pulled together over the years to help me with writing, plotting, or procrastinating (all the above?). Let me know what you think by leaving a comment below!

Writing Tools

TEMPLATE - StepSheet   (150 Hits)
Posted 09-07-2009

Based on James N. Frey's How To Write A Damn Good Novel & How To Write A Damn Good Mystery, this spreadsheet tracks major players by both scene and "off-screen" events. It can be helpful when plotting and tracking multiple story lines.

I developed this timeline for the National Novel Publishing Year site (http://nanopubye.freeforums.org), for which I'm an admin. Download it, try it out, and let me know what you think!

Have you ever felt out of touch with reality, or like you’ve missed the boat? Perhaps fallen overboard and no one seems to notice you’re gone? Then this is the spread for you!

  1. So, this may seem extremely noobish of me, but in the StepSheet template, does Wthr mean weather? And it means in the story right?

And then wc means word count right

    • Haha – yes, sorry for my codes. You got it! And feel free to tweak and add rows, I’d love to hear how you come along with it. :)

  2. Hi, I was just doing some research for a new video I’m going to make and wound up here. Looks like you have some interesting stuff. . . I’m doing some translations of stuff nobody has seen before and putting it up so feel free to stop by and check it out. I think it might be interesting to you. :)

    • I went to your site to check out your video… and books and notes and blog… wow! That will take me a while to get through it all.

I also see you’re leaving soon on a 4yr mission to Myanmar, and from the sounds of it you won’t have access to your site. Will someone be helping you while you’re gone, keeping it up, etc?

      Good luck! And blessings.

  3. I was reading the boards on nanopubye and saw that you had made these resources available. Thank you so much! Having the time broken down and used to calculate specific dates makes the entire task of writing a novel a lot less intimidating. Great job!

I see you are interested in Tarot. Stop by my site sometime — I am a fan of Runes. Thanks again for your hard work on these spreadsheets.

    • Thanks for stopping by, Monika. I’m always happy to hear that my backwards way of thinking about things may not be so backwards for everyone. :) Let me know if you have any questions as you go through the spreadsheets — I’m no programmer, but I love tweaking the formulas and figuring out better ways to automate the fields.
